Simply Safe

Attention all coach drivers and coach operators!

BUSK is appealing to coach drivers and coach operators to take part in a survey about their views and experiences of school visits abroad.  In September this year, during School Transport Safety Week we plan to launch a campaign to highlight how these trips are planned.  We will target parents and schools in an attempt to educate them about helping the coach company make the journey safer.  For example, if you are a coach driver reading this, have you experienced the school party checking out of the hotel straight after breakfast and getting another day’s skiing in whilst you have to hang around until tea time before setting off on the long journey home.  Has adequate provision been made for you to rest while the teachers and pupils are skiing?  Are you expected to share rooms with other drivers or are you provided with a room above a kitchen with noisy fans operating keeping you awake?

If you have concerns please tell us about them.  We promise not to identify anyone who provides us with facts and experiences of travelling abroad and suggestions to improve safety.  You can download our survey as a word document or pdf. Please complete and return to BUSK at our Newport address.  Thank you.

What does BUSK do?

BUSK specialises in the safe transportation of children and young people and is the only organisation of it's kind in the UK.

Apart from the work that BUSK does, our sister company Belt Up School Kids runs safety campaigns and actively works to promote safer practices for the most vulnerable road passengers to include children and adults with SEN or who are required to travel in a vehicle in their wheelchair. The BUSK website will also incorporate news and events that are run by Belt Up School Kids. If you are unable to find what you are looking for please Contact Us for assistance.

Motor Accident Solicitors Society (MASS)

Motor Accident Solicitors Society (MASS) BUSK is grateful to the members of the Motor Accident Solicitors Society (MASS) for their support which allowed BUSK to carry out in depth research into coach and bus structures and vehicle design, resulting in a high profile campaign highlighting the need for school children to be correctly and safely restrained when travelling in cars, coaches and minibuses. Seat belt legislation making belts compulsory in coaches and minibuses that carried children in the UK followed. In particular BUSK was able to identify the various types of injuries children sustain as a direct result of being transported in vehicles using adult safety belt systems.

BUSK has been able to move forward significantly to improve childrens' safety since it was founded in February 1993, however, without the support of MASS the very foundation required for us to build on would have no doubt meant that it would have taken a lot longer for the organisation to bring about the vital changes that currently safeguard children today. Every parent putting a child on a school coach or minibus where a safety belt is provided should also be grateful to MASS. To access the MASS website please click here.
